5 Tips for Composing Your Photos

Keeping it short and sweet today! Whether you are taking pictures with a DSLR or the camera on your phone, try keeping these 5 things in mind when composing your photos!

Tip #1: Move around your subject to shoot the scene from different angles and perspectives! Sometimes your favorite shot will not be the most obvious from the start.

Tip #2: Give the subject room to breathe from the edged of the frame. If you do not include a person’s entire body, avoid cutting off at any limb that bends (think ankles, knees, hips, elbows, wrists, neck, etc..)

Tip #3: Pay attention to how every element in your frame appears. How do they work together? Does anything distract from your subject? Watch the edges and the background to make sure you can avoid distracting elements.

Tip #4: Consider the orientation of you frame and the movement of your subject. An image may become stronger just by turning your camera from a horizontal from to a vertical frame.

Tip #5: Look for the light and shadows. Dark shadows and bright lights can be just as distracting as a trash can or a neon sign in the background of your image.
